Game away at Formby on a sunny September afternoon, the first game for the newly formed Hesketh Colts women's team. Looking forward to the step up in challenge and testing themselves in the Open Age Group League. Through the summer the team has been building up and working together, training hard and playing friendlies.

The game started tense with both sides attacking well but lacking that final service or touch in the final third. The first chance fell to the Colts when the Formby keeper's clearance found Jess in the striker role but unfortunately the shot was dragged wide. In return Formby threatened the Colts goal done the left hand side testing the defence with balls delivered into the box. Finally the deadlock was broken when Faye slipped Erin through on goal and Erin found the top right hand corner to make it 1 – 0 Colts. A great start, but this was short lived as 3 minutes later Formby pulled level with a counter attack, Colts not clearing the lines and the ball nestled in the corner. 1 – 1 game on!

Both teams battling hard, after some pressure on the Colts goal, Georgia found Jess from a corner (I think) and the net bulged to make it 2 – 1 to the Colts again. The sun started to come out, as the half time whistle blew both teams looked to take on water and prep for the next 45 mins. After a quick team talk and hopefully some wise words the Colts went back out and really started bright taking the game to Formby. Within 3 minutes of the restart it was 3 – 1 to the Colts with Faye again providing an assist that Jess finished with a slight deflection. 2 goals in the bag for Jess and 2 assist for Faye. The second half Colts played better football and started to find the gaps on the wings and between the lines, however Formby always looked a threat.

As players tired, fitness certainly became a factor, and hopefully some recent hard work paid off! Erin slid in Faye on the 83rd minute to make it 4 – 1 Colts. Then towards the end Georgia's free kick found Ellen who slid the ball in in the 88th minute. The game finished 5 – 1 to the Colts. Score line maybe flattering us slightly but the Colts certainly deserved the victory as the game went on. Lots to work on that could make us more clinical in front of goal and tighter at the back. The pitch was certainly a challenge to play football on with the heat. We expect a tougher return from Formby next time with them adding an experienced keeper but I'm sure we can step it up a level or two too!

At the back the girls all battled hard to ensure we only conceded 1 goal. Ellie made some solid saves and the defence including Daisymae, Erin L, Liv, Anna, Tanya, Cassie and Alex all battled hard. Chelsea and Georgia did a solid job in the middle to control play, Georgia taking MOTM award for always trying to get the ball down and play football. Erin battled hard in front of them and always looked dangerous. Out wide Faye and Ellen created chances and caused chaos for the Formby defence. And up front Jess and Jas always looked a threat.

Keep it going girls we are proud of this team, well done for the team spirit, the battle and in the end the win!
